Kansas City Zoo - Penguins

Sponsored by Kansas City Zoo

The Kansas City Zoo is the place to be this summer! Go wild and explore the new animals and new exhibits now open at the Zoo.

Hip Hippo Hooray! The Zoo welcomed a new hippo in May; you must meet darling little Cairo. Just three years old, Cairo is much smaller than our adult female, Liberty. Cairo was born on August 18, 2015, and will celebrate her fourth birthday at the Zoo this summer. She has a curious but cautious personality and a huge appetite for her favorite food, romaine lettuce.

The Zoo also added an interactive experience with our camels. The new Camel Feeding Deck is located on the northwest side of the camel yard, creating increased viewing of the camels and a unique opportunity to feed them. The deck provides a shaded area for visitors to take a break from the elements while bonding with our three dromedary camels, Missy, Kizzy and Pearl.

Kansas City Zoo - Tree Kangaroo

Visitors will also be able to view our tree kangaroos in a whole new way. We are in the process of a renovation of our Matschie’s tree kangaroo habitat located in the Zoo’s Australia section. This new habitat will include an indoor viewing area where these unique marsupials will be visible to the public year-round. Since tree kangaroos are primarily tree dwellers, the project will include man-made trees similar to their natural environment. The Tree Kangaroo exhibit will be complete in July.

No visit is complete without a stop by our most popular exhibits, Helzberg Penguin Plaza, Stingray Bay, Orangutan Canopy and Polar Bear Passage. Don’t miss our elephants, chimpanzees, giraffes (including two youngsters, Dixie and Maxwell), and all 1,700 animals that call the Zoo home. Check out our daily shows, Sea Lion Splash, Wings of Wonder and Amazing Animal Ambassadors, to meet some of our stars up close.

Kansas City Zoo - Baby Chimp

Our animals are most active first thing in the morning, so take advantage of our summer hours. The Zoo opens at 8 a.m. through Labor Day to allow for early-morning viewing during the cooler part of the day.

Guests are also welcome to bring in their food and drinks for refreshment. We have several scenic locations perfect for a picnic lunch and parking at the Zoo is always free!

Each visit to the Kansas City Zoo is a new adventure!
